Unfenced: A New Short Film on Rewilding in Patagonia Park

20.12.24 — News, Patagonia Park

In July 2024, amidst an especially harsh winter in the Southern Hemisphere, the rewilding team at Patagonia Park Argentina undertook a monumental task: removing miles of fencing across the region. While it may appear straightforward, this act has a profound ecological effect – removing fences allows guanacos to continue their ancestral migrations, a crucial behavior for ecosystem health. The park is one of the few places in South America where seasonal altitudinal migrations still occur, and these migrations are key to preventing overgrazing and thus sustaining the balance of the entire ecosystem.

With the support of Freyja Foundation and Rewilding Argentina, filmmakers Wiktoria A. Ciesielska, Piotr Niemczewski, and Maria Garcia traveled to Patagonia Park to document these efforts. Their new film UNFENCED brings to life not only the story of the conservation strategies at work in Patagonia Park, but also the breathtaking beauty of the region in winter. Against a backdrop of vast, snow-covered horizons and icy winds, the film reveals the resilience of Patagonia’s steppe and the dedication of those working to protect it.

Immerse yourself in the stunning winter imagery and powerful story of Patagonia’s revival below.
